WINDOWS CODE LEAKED, MICROSOFT INVESTIGATING DISCLOSURE 02.13.04 NEWS FLASH GRIDtoday ============================================================================== Microsoft Corp. confirmed rumors last night that portions of its Windows 2000 and Windows NT source codes were illegally leaked via the Internet. Though experts are divided in their projections of potential consequences, Microsoft is nonetheless actively working with the FBI to halt the proliferation of the code and to identify those responsible. As of now, Microsoft does not believe that the disclosure was a breach of its corporate network or internal security. The source code, though only partially leaked, makes up one of Microsoft's most valuable products and could potentially lead to even more attacks against the company. However, since there are tens of millions lines of code, Microsoft does not believe a partial leak to be immediate cause for panic. And a rival could not release Windows-coded software without being halted by a Microsoft lawsuit. "It's illegal for third parties to post Microsoft source code, and we take such activity very seriously," said Tom Pilla, a Microsoft spokesman. Microsoft's website ( http://www.microsoft.com ) states that there is no known impact on customers as of yet. The company vows to take any appropriate steps to ensure protection of its customers and their networks.
